How to Look After Eyelash Extensions

  1. You can get them wet! I superbond all lash sets so that you are able to get them wet immediately after your set. However if you have a cheeky cry or go swimming, please give them a rinse afterwards.

  2. Gentle Cleansing: Use a foaming lash-friendly cleanser or oil-free makeup remover to cleanse your lashes daily and remove not only ‘eye makeup’ but makeup and oils around the eyes. Avoid rubbing or pulling on the extensions. A fluffy brush is ideal for this process - I provide one to all new clients.
You can also use a gentle hypochlorous acid (HOCl) lash spray - it’s a naturally antibacterial, lash-safe solution that keeps your lash line clean and helps prevent irritation or build-up between washes. I provide a 10ml spray (0.014%) for clients who prefer something quick and easy for daily lash hygiene, just bring back your empty bottle and I can refill it for you.

  3. No Oil-Based Products: Steer clear of oil-based and water-proof makeup and skincare products in the eye area. Oils can weaken the adhesive and shorten the lifespan of your extensions.

  4. Brush Your Lashes: Use a clean spoolie brush to gently comb through your lashes daily. This keeps them looking neat and prevents them from getting tangled.

  5. Limit Eye Rubbing: Avoid rubbing your eyes as this can cause the extensions to come loose or fall out.

  6. Schedule Regular Fills: To maintain the fullness of your lashes, book a fill appointment every 2-3 weeks, depending on your natural lash cycle and lifestyle.

  7. Sleep on Your Back: If possible, try to sleep on your back to avoid crushing your lashes against the pillow. Contour lash masks are a great alternative if you sleep on your side or face. I highly recommend the slip contour eye mask, the cheaper alternatives I have trialed have just been a waste of money and gone straight in the bin.

  8. Avoid Mascara: Generally, mascara is unnecessary with extensions and can cause clumping. If you feel the need to use mascara, opt for a water-based product designed specifically for eyelash extensions. I stock an excellent tubing mascara that is lash friendly safe, ask about it next time you are in!

  9. Avoid extreme heat: Keep your lashes away from high heat sources like ovens, open flames, lighters, and blow dryers on hot settings. Excess heat can relax the curl- or worse, singe the lashes. Always use caution when around heat.

  10. Consult Your Technician: Always consult with your lash technician for personalised aftercare advice, especially if you're unsure about products or techniques. I am always happy to help! And if I don’t know, I love researching to learn more so will look into it for you.

Following these guidelines will help maintain the integrity of your eyelash extensions and ensure they look beautiful for as long as possible.

  • It is important to remove your makeup, spf, or even just the natural oils that build up daily. A lash shampoo and a fluffy brush are great for makeup wearers. Foam directly onto the eye, work the product in with your brush and rinse with water.

Ophthalmologists recommend using a hypochlorous acid (HOCl) spray daily - and I do too. A quick mist directly onto closed eyes and brush through with your spoolie is all it takes to keep your lash line clean and your extensions lasting longer. Blot away the excess if needed, no rinsing, no sting, just fresh lashes.

  • Yes! You can use a hypochlorous acid (HOCl) lash spray for gentle, daily cleansing. Just mist and brush through with a spoolie. No need to rinse. HOIC is what our white blood cells produce naturally to kill bacteria and calm inflammation, so it’s completely safe for sensitive eyes and pregnancy-friendly.

  • Yes - even if you don’t wear makeup, it’s important to cleanse your lashes daily. Natural oils, skin cells, and dust can build up along the lash line, which can affect retention and irritate the eyes over time.

If you prefer a low-maintenance routine, a quick spritz of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) lash spray each day is an easy alternative. It keeps your lash line clean, reduces bacteria, and helps your extensions last longer — without needing a full cleanse every time.

  • Cleaning your lashes is essential for maintaining their health and prolonging the life of your extensions. It is a common misconception that cleaning your lashes will cause more to fall out. In reality, natural lash shedding occurs regardless of whether you have extensions. This process can simply become more noticeable when extensions are applied.

Each eyelash has a growth cycle, and shedding is a normal part of that cycle. When you neglect to clean your lashes, the build-up of dirt, oil, and other products can block follicles, inhibiting the growth of new lashes. By regularly cleaning your lashes, you allow space for new growth, ensuring that your natural lashes remain healthy.

During a refill appointment, when I clean and prep your lashes, the existing extensions may untangle, causing some to fall out. This is a natural occurrence, as the old extensions can sometimes prevent the new lashes from emerging effectively. Regular maintenance and cleaning prevent this blocking and support the natural growth cycle, ultimately keeping your lash line looking full and fresh.

  • Regular refills are essential for maintaining the integrity and appearance of your lashes. Over time, natural shedding occurs, and without consistent refills, gaps can form, leading to a less polished look. A refill every few weeks ensures your lashes remain full and beautifully defined, enhancing your overall appearance.

Additionally, regular visits allow us to assess the health of your natural lashes. This proactive approach helps prevent any potential damage from overuse of lash extensions. Each session also provides an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns or adjustments, ensuring your experience aligns perfectly with your aesthetic goals.

Committing to regular refills not only preserves the beauty of your lashes but also supports their health, making it a critical part of your lash care routine.

  • When the time comes to take a break from your eyelash extensions, it's crucial to return to your lash technician for the removal process. Professional removals ensure the health of your natural lashes. An experienced lash tech will use the appropriate products and techniques to safely dissolve the adhesive, preventing unnecessary damage to your natural lashes.

Attempting to remove extensions at home can result in pulling or breaking your natural lashes, leading to long-term issues. Additionally, a professional removal allows for a thorough examination of your lash line, ensuring that any potential concerns can be addressed promptly. Your lash technician can also provide personalised care recommendations, helping you maintain the health and integrity of your lashes during the break.

Many people decide to just let the lashes grow out and fall out with time. However this can put stress on the natural lashes as the extensions have growth too far down the natural lashes which can cause breakage or even pull out the natural lash.

Ultimately, prioritising a professional removal protects your natural lashes while maintaining the relationship with your lash tech, who knows your lash history and can guide you on your next set’s ideal timing and style.
